Term 4

Welcome back to the last term of 2012.

It's another busy term with the school production at the end of week three (November 1, 2, 3). There are a number of students from Room 12 in the show.

The main focus of the term is the Enterprise scheme. Students build their own business in small groups for a mini market between the Isel classes in week 6 and then a full school market day in week 8. We look at all aspects of designing, producing, marketing and selling goods and services. To go along with this we focus on advertising for literacy.

In maths we start the term looking at algebra and will then get back into decimals to finish the year.

The focus for PE is athletics, building up to Athletics day in week 5. We also start back into swimming in week 5.

Being the last term there are also plenty of tests and the end of year report.

Should be a fun, busy term.

Mount Robert

Room 12 took on the challenge of climbing Mount Robert on August 1 and comfortably succeeded in conquering the mountain. Showers and heavy wind were forecast when we left Broadgreen Intermediate but after a few early showers the weather wasn't too bad the rest of the day.
The class showed good support for those that needed an extra push to get up Pinchgut track and they all enjoyed playing in the snow (icy and slowly disappearing) at the top. We even managed to complete the track in good time so we made it back to school before 6pm (the fastest time to date this year).
Well done Room 12.

Hacket

Room 12 became rock detectives as we explored the mineral belt at the Hacket. The rain kindly stopped for the day but the days of rain prior meant there was no avoiding getting wet feet. Mr J was our wise tour guide explaining both the history of the area and the geology of the rocks. We saw sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rock along with weta and the waterfall in full flow. Apart from the odd blister it was a very enjoyable day out.

Matariki

To celebrate Matariki (the Maori New Year) Room 12 made some kites, which Maori believed linked them to the gods. Some interesting designs were created and the test flights on a blustery, showery afternoon had mixed results.
There is also a hangi at school on Thursday to celebrate the first new moon after the Matariki stars become visible, signifying the new year.

Speeches

Room 12 have completed speeches for 2012. Everyone took on the challenge of speaking in front of the class well with some interesting and varied topics.
Lauren, Zac and Trudi were selected to go through to the House Speech finals and all three performed strongly.
Lauren has made it through to the school speech finals to represent Isel, along with Lilly from Room 14.

Technology Challenge

Room 12 competed in the nationwide technology challenge with varying degrees of success. The task was to create a butterfly observation net with newspaper, tape, ice block sticks and clear files.

Fruit and Vegie racers

While most students took part in Summer Tournament on March 23, those that stayed behind in Room 12 created racing machines out of old fruit and vegetables.
All vehicles ended up in the compost but before that there was some intense creating and racing down the ramp by the top courts.
The names for the mobiles included Skux mobile, Fantastic Fruit Car, Death Racer and the KFC mobile.
Some of the creations and creators are pictured below.
